GetUp goes in with Gunns blazing
Friday's headline in The Age was one to remember. After years of fighting to protect Tasmania's precious old growth forests we've finally convinced Gunns to get out of the business of native forest logging.
The writing has been on the wall for Gunns for some time now, and this victory is thanks to your efforts and those of our partners at organisations like The Wilderness Society and Environment Tasmania.
GetUp members have funded full page newspaper ads in Australia and abroad. We've mobilised shareholders and customers to influence the ANZ bank and scare off all other Australian banks from financing a destructive pulp mill.
GetUp members like you then took the fight to the world's biggest financial markets with ads in European and Asian newspapers. Over the years we've written to Environment Ministers, placed thousands of phone calls and sent tens of thousands of emails to our politicians to keep this campaign alive.
This victory has proved that when we mobilise in numbers, we can demand far more from unsustainable Australian companies.

GetUp has great potential!
The MSM in Australia, as in America, is controlled by the monied classes for the advantage of the monied classes (who control most of the wealth).
GetUp provides an alternative to the MSM as do many blogs (my own included: dangerouscreation.com) and, as such, should be supported.
Australians are currently involved in Afghanistan and Iraq, not because we, the people, said so, but because John Howard, an American arse-licker, said so. Julia appears to be following this trend of 'politicians know best'. Well, they don't! Look at Obama. He promised change. He lied.
If America or Israel attack Iran are we going to follow? Do Australians really want to be involved in a nuclear war to further America's imperial designs?
GetUp, an independent voice, should be supported by every Australian citizen who wants to see real 'government by the people, for the people.'
Stand up and be counted while you can!
Good and bad
The good is that Getup is innovative, quite good at using current technology to champion grass-roots politics and is getting results.
The bad is that it seems to still be largely operating on an us and them mentality.
