From Little Kev Big Hits GetUp?

The apology to the Stolen Generations on 13 February 2008 marked a place in Australian history that The GetUp Mob - featuring Kev Carmody, Paul Kelly, Urthboy and Missy Higgins, have commemorated with the release on April 21 of the new GetUp StandUp version of 'From Little Things Big Things Grow'.

#2 and rising!

ABC News Radio just reported that the GetUp StandUp version of From Little Things Big Things Grow debuted at #4 on the ARIA chart. However the ARIA chart itself currently has it at #2.

Great, but ...

No. 2 on the ARIA chart already. Shame that Alan ruled out doing any stunts for us if it hits No.1

Aria

Craig Rowley, looking at the songs on the chart, it does not have much competition.

Australian songs vs Australian charts

I'd have to agree, Alan, on the chart linked by Mark, which is the chart only showing Australian songs - ie ignoring songs by artists from all other countries. On the full chart, GetUp is indeed at #4, though, and the (non-Australian) songs around it are more worthy of competition. On the Digital (download) chart, it is again #2 to Madonna & J Timberlake ...

Swings and roundabouts

I was once a manager and agent for a rock band - they actually made money - but we smoked it.

Fortunately I gave up smoking but my liver now regrets it.

Now what thread is this?

Err what web site?

Err what is this thing protruding from my rear?

Think I will call it a tail or is it a flower pot?

Fiona: Perhaps you are morphing into a Moomintroll, Justin. BTW, I've observed your edict regarding your last.

Hit song

This without doubt has got to be the worst piece of music I have ever heard, it might be alright played in the pubs where the patrons are pi***d, but if GetUp think it is going to get to No.1 they are kidding themselves. If this is the best this mob (Kev Carmody, Paul Kelly, Urthboy, Missy Higgins, Mia Dyson, Ozi Batla, Pat Dodson, and John Butler and the voices of Kevin Rudd and Paul Keating) can up with I am sorry for them. I would have thought GetUp would be better in exposing the ripoffs perpertrated by some of the elders of the Aboriginals. Just another stunt, but a poor one.

Is it going to get to No.1?

Thanks, Alan.

Now we can all wait a wee while and we'll soon see how the GetUp StandUp version of From Little Things Big Things Grow goes on the ARIA Australian Chart

If it does get to No.1, will you do a stunt for us?

No. 1

Craig, just what the Aboriginal people want a new song to improve their lot. We spend $86 million to watch the Pope and Pell walk around in frocks and silly hats. Why does the Pope have to sail down the harbour - could he just not walk across the water?

By the way I do not do stunts, I leave that to the pros like Rudd & Co. However I will buy the song for $1.69.  That will make me feel good.

You never know your luck

Actually, Alan, I was thinking about contacting GetUp and offering a sales oulet. It just needs a bit of push, and of course some commercial airplay.

The ARIA charts are always a problem, Craig. I've always wanted to include sales at gigs in them. Some peope subcontract an ARIA store to sell for them, others don't sell at the gig at all, in order for their songs to chart. If the albums sold where the music is played were included in the figures, you'd see different results.

The music industry is yet another money-game to many, and I don't believe the figures always reflect what's being listened to, more what you should think about buying. Having said that I'm quite proud to have even been an ARIIA Award nominee ('97, World Music). You feel like a real muso when you're hanging with the big boys.

The song won't hit the Arias this week. If they're playing it in the Big Brother house next week (odd how BB puts out an album when the contestants have no access to music) because let's face it the title isn't appropriate for The Biggest Loser, mainstream exposure may influece the charts.

Do you think Rogue Traders would be charting so well if Natalie Bassithwaite didn't have a new TV show? It's been over a year since Izzy was on Neighbours, and the punters (especially the 10-13 demographic who do most of the purchasing) forget easily.

If there is enough subculture demand, the commercials will get onto it. Perhaps Rove MacManus will "break" it?

The reviews have been pretty good ... let's see what's next. I hope, Alan, you'll be watching Rage this weekend with interest, and have your ear glued to JJJ.

Got At

Richard Tonkin, how about this from the latest email from GetUp:

Can you chip in only $1.69 to make this song echo around the nation? Only a few thousand more units need to be sold to knock Madonna off her perch, and all proceeds go to achieving Indigenous equality".

I wonder what they mean by "Indigenous equality" it sounds a lot like "No child shall live in ...................., more Labor bulls**t. I would have thought that if all the musos in Australia donated half of what they spend on drugs it would be a better proposition.

Fiona: Almost as good as "Interest rates will always be lower under a Coalition government", isn't it, Alan?

Muso's drug money?

As somebody who has prepared and delivered many hundreds of band riders, I can tell you that things ain't what they used to be.  Most musos are very moderate in their consumption.  As someone who's dwelt in many a green room I can also say that the only green you find is on the walls.  Bloody venue operators are too stingy with their riders for that sort of stuff.  Was one asked to provide four fresh pairs of underpants, though.  Incidentally GetUp's Kate Faerhman used to work with us.

I  hope they do manage to get the song up the charts. Many people decide what they'll buy based on reading or hearing them.

I also hope that this song is being nominated for this year's Word Music ARIA Award.

Next time you get to Adelaide, Alan, II'll take you backstage for a look.

PS On the salary of the majority of musos, you truly reckon they could support a habit?   You've obviously never been busking for dog food money.

Fiona: Richard, go to bed. Hope I have dealt with all the typos. BTW, totally agree with you regarding drug money. Alan, you should really address your suggestion to the spin merchants (among other high flyers).

Carmody comments

"It gives me the tremendous positivity that the younger generation has taken it to the next level" Kev Carmody said on ABC-891 this afternoon. Carmody saiid many of the musos on the project were from the group The Herd

On the possibility of a revamped ATSIC, Carfmody told interviewer Carole Whitelock that "We've got to have a national voice. The structure has to be radically different from what it was. As with all organisations the power-brokers get to the top, and we've got to get it coming from a grassroots level"

The song sounded great over the radio. Carmody himself had only heard it and seen the video for the first time today.
