Management Update 26

Site statistics

Published article count was 25 in December, from 75 in November. Published comments were 1235 in December, from 2334 in November. All traffic stats (visitors, page counts etc) were around half those of November.

We didn’t publish 45 abusive, content-free or incomprehensible comments in December: total comments intended for publication and not published: 45/1280=3.5%.

Finances

Cash income in December was $45 in donations and $164.05 from Google Adsense: total $209.05, versus expenditure of $13 for bank fees. There might be some more income in donations in the PO Box, since I haven't been on the same continent to open it since 30 November (and won't until 17 January - next stop Guatemala and complete comms blackout). Cash in the bank at end September was $2,033.80. That Google payment from November ads represents a snafu by Google, as the actual income was US$189.15: which should have been around A$220 if they'd applied the exchange rate the right way round. December ad revenue was US$70.38.

Comment frequency

It seems that contributors are limited to one per month - as I understand it.

That seems very reasonable - but perhaps a little limiting!

However I wonder if the 'rule' might perhaps cause a preponderance of 'heavy' articles which might militate against the flexibility of more, briefer articles and responses, that might contribute better to the concept of a 'conversational' site, permitting a more dynamic interactive flow of argument ???

Richard:  Basil, no there's no such rule.  David Roffey observed a while back (in one of the Management Updates) that it's rare to receive mone than one piece a month from any Webdiary contributor.  Looking forward to your contributions!  Oh, by the way.  There is a limit on the number of comments a contributor can post each day.  Until around six months ago it was five - Margo raised it to ten, which seems to be working fine.

Google second cough

Google AdSense coughed up a further $53.98 in early January while I was in Guatemala** , bringing the ad income total to $218.03, as expected.

** stunningly beautiful, amazing Mayan stuff at Tikal, pics on flickr sometime soon - meantime try my daughter's blog and my son's first set.

Bit of cheap blog-whoring...

Happy New Year, Webdiary and all who sail in her...Dave, I hope for old time's sake you might excuse this rather tacky bit of rampant blog-whoring, on this admin thread.  The thing is...well, I've finally got my bum off the ground and have bodged up another solo blog.

OK if I spruik the link here just the once, in case there's any 'Diarists who remain interested in my ramblings? It's a fledgling little low-key affair in a low-key corner of the blogosphere. Limited ranting, I promise. Pretty narky blog rules.

My new blog is at http://butterfliesandguns.wordpress.com; it's called 'Butterflies and Guns'; it's here  You're all warmly welcome.

Hope things are all well with the 'Diary crew.

Fiona: HNY to you from all the team, Jack. In Monsieur Roffey's absence in parts of the world unknown to the www, I say go for it. But do come back and play here from time to time.

Princess Di

For the young'uns just in case they don't know what Richard was all about. I thought the song was for Princess Di.

Malcolm in the Middle

Hi Malcolm, the story was a little muddle. But the good Lord did giveth and the Good Lord did taketh. The good Lord gaveth him the courage to try to prove that action is indeed louder words with some sweet young thing. The good Lord then tooketh him away. He did a "Billy Snedden" and as far as we know he is now up there with the 76 virgins.

As we are still in the silly season, things are also getting "heated up" in Malaysia. The Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek quit all his government and political posts after he admitted being the man in the sex DVD.

Ah, good old Bill

I happened to be in Canberra for a debating festival when news of Mr Snedden's demise hit the tabloids. We were staying in a hostel type thinggy on Northbourne Avenue somewhere close to where I was staying earlier this week (highly recommended) and there was a news kiosk on the ground floor. Not normally an organ to which I subscribed was The Truth on display with lurid headlines recording the event. The line that particularly caught my eye was the report of the detective first called to the scene (the motel above the Rushcutters Bowl as it then was if I recall correctly) saying: "At least he died happy."

Requiem for Bill

I'm so old and you're so young
Bits of me have long gone bung
It's not that you don't titillate
My poor old ego won't inflate..
Once I pop this little pill,
we'll sit down and watch "The Bill"
You and I will never part
(I've taken fifty for a start)

Oh! Please!  Stand for me!
Viagra

Speechless

Fiona, no words please. Don't say anything. Action is always louder than word. Maybe I should also tell what happened to my friend with Viagra.

Do tell

PF Journey, you have a friend with Viagra?   What are the symptoms? Does it hurt? How did he/she contract it?   And what exactly did you mean by: "Action is always louder than word"? Is the bang worth the whimper?

Those of us in our (ostensible) early 50's are still managing to struggle by - although a gentleman never tells (and NEVER yells).

Quite engroaning waiting for your two penn'oth in reply.

Yes kiddies: it's the silly season.

Yes Virginia, there is Santa

Are we still in the silly season? This is just too good to miss. Have not seen this being reported elsewhere except at the prudish Singapore. Note where the drug is being tested. It has to be University of Virginia.

Gel to pump up women's sex drive? - CHARLOTTESVILLE (VIRGINIA) - A DRUG that could do for women what Viagra has done for men is being tested at the University of Virginia (UVa). The drug is a testosterone-laden ointment called LibiGel and is intended to boost the libido of women who have lost interest in sex.

Fiona: What can I (or anyone) possibly say, PF - apart from Happy New Year? (Maybe I will tell you about my cousin's opinion of Viagra off Webdiary...)

Google Adsense

email from Google ...

Hi there,

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

It appears that the November payment you recently received was
calculated using an inverted exchange rate. We'd like to let you know
that you'll be receiving an additional payment using the correct
exchange rate to make up the difference. This payment will be issued to
your bank account this week and we expect that you'll receive it by
Monday, January 7, 2008 if not sooner.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mel-Ann

Australia and New Zealand
