Vale Bernie, Matt.
Matt Price was always a pleasure to read. From his writings it was easy to see he was a good natured person.
I was fortune enough to meet Bernie Banton at the launch of the Climate Change Coalition. Apart from his amazing fight and achievements, what a thoroughly pleasant chap he was-happy to chat about anything in between gulping oxygen from the small tank he carried around.
A true Aussie legend who will never be forgotten.
Cassidy and Ramsey
In Alan Ramsey's final email to Matt Price, he mentioned he heard that Costello had visited Matt. Ramsey said, "I hear from the Costello camp he visited you. Good for him." This was in yesterday's Herald. Given that Matt had visits from both Costello and Howard shortly before he died it seems unlikely the Coalition was a government he hated. I am not saying he was a supporter either. I don't know. I'd defer to old Labor man Cassidy's remarks.
A government he hated?
John Howard visited Matt Price at his home not long before he died. Barry Cassidy made the following observation re Matt in the Australian:
"I would never have known which way Matt voted ... he praised, criticised or ridiculed on merit. I can honestly say that he was apolitical. He cared about policy, the individual, but he was never party political."

The Good Chair
Yes Fiona, Matt was always on the good chair on the Insiders.
Fiona: I shall watch with interest tomorrow, PF, and see if it is left vacant in his honour.
They both lived just long enough
Matt was one of the stars of journalism who thankfully lived long enough to know that a government he hated was thrown in the bin.
Bernie's legacy is beyond the realms of mortal imagination.
Essence
PF, you have the most extraordinary capacity to capture the essence of people and of their lives. Thank you for your song for two outstanding people (I'm still drying my tears) - and may they and their passion and compassion be a beacon to us all.
