Fear or favour

"Buddha talked compassion before that, and throw in a few other luminaries, and we live not alone at times of calling. But JC brought the word into the world, and such is the power of love, it creates myths and magic, real and unreal, daily still. Here we are today, and while today we talk about love, we don't always live it. And as we don't fully live the life of love, we know and understand fear and live it much the same. The two are partners, love and fear, dancing a duet through our minds and hearts. We are at times partner to one and then the other, and spending more time in this dance by that process we'll come to better know both." Robert Bosler

Bosler's review of the Latham Diaries

"The notion that a politician could wrap up his time in public office in a book without amendment for how they might be regarded was inconceivable, before this one.  Mark Latham has not only (to use one of his own terms) pole-axed the Labor Party in The Latham Diaries, he has pole-axed along with the last of his public reputation that notion as well, at least for some time to come. But that seemed to be his intention. So why did he do it? The answer might be found in the great unspoken truth (by a serving politician) of the Australian political system - that it has been horribly reduced to falsity, treachery and showmanship - and that the media interface between that system and the Australian people, supposed to serve each of those, is even worse. Since his public regard was tied up in that mess, perhaps he considered it best to scuttle the lot of it." Robert Bosler

The fall guys

"Without effective Opposition the political system is uncontained, spilling and revolting like a fish milkshake; misshapen. Perspective is lost. Distortion, necessarily, passes for public information from all quarters. We are all affected: the good public folk consider themselves being treated well by a government when they may not be; likewise, people consider themselves being treated unfairly by the government when they may not be. Opposition is the container to the mess that otherwise necessarily spews out and misshapes the political landscape." Robert Bosler

Question time or a time to question

"Fascinating time we live in just now. When many are publicly declaring answers to why our nation is in its current state, and a great many more privately doing the same, there seems also an undercurrent of perhaps the vast majority who though not necessarily voicing it are nevertheless also inclined to question. Who would really know, of course.Yet for Australia to be thrust into these times of widespread talk of fear and serious threat it is fair to assume there are some serious questions on the national mind."
