A role by name for reality TV raids

"This morning at 5am, I was awoken by a startling noise. No, it wasn’t the invisible muezzin (the invisible dude with the Jesus-beard who apparently calls all Muslim households in Australia to prayer) telling me to wake up for fajr (the pre-dawn service). Nor was it the sound of invisible ASIO agents crashing through my bedroom window to foil some attack they read about in the Saudi Gazette. In fact, it was a commercial TV station. Here’s how the conversation went." Irfan Yusuf

An Aussie Mossies' response to Paris burning

"The children of Muslim migrants make up the majority of Muslims in Australia. These marginal Muslims are what I call the “Aussie Mossies” (or “Kiwi Mossies”, if you like, where “Mossie” is an abbreviation for Muslim). I know them because I am one of them. I have slightly darker skin and a name no one seems to be able to pronounce correctly. Often I am tempted to anglicise my name. I speak fluent English, not Arabic or Hindi or some other language. Although I can swear in Urdu when I am angry. And anger is a common feature amongst the Aussie and Kiwi Mossies. We are angry because our parents’ generation have failed us. They have brought us to peaceful liberal countries where we learnt a culture of tolerance and openness. Yet so many Muslim youth are caught in a cultural clash with their parents, who expect them to be just as Fijian or Pakistani or Malay as people were in the 1970’s or whenever it was our parents brought us here." Unusual laws, usual suspects, usual excuses

"According to a report in The Australian newspaper on 28 September 2005, ASIO's briefing to Premiers and Chief Ministers attending the COAG meeting included claims that some 800 local Muslim "extremists" are ready to carry out a London-style attack. The report came as the President of the Police Federation of Australia issued a statement confirming that Muslims will be directly affected by enforcement of the new laws. The Federation has called upon the government to legislate so that police officers are indemnified for civil action. To describe the proposed laws as unusual would be an understatement. To claim the laws will not lead to racial profiling of persons deemed Muslim is a bald-faced lie." Irfan Yusuf
