Prepare for rocky September
One is reminded here of White House chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel's April words: “In the next four years there is going to be a permanent status arrangement between Israel and the Palestinians on the basis of two states for two peoples, and it doesn't matter to us at all who is prime minister." It is enough for me to plan to be at his computer on the last Saturday in September rather than be watching the AFL Grand Final.

Time for Queensland to enter the 21st century
My view is that there is a semantic confusion between "abortion" in its most negative, "laden", and controversial sense and what I would describe as "retrospective contraception", particularly involving RU486.

The Shame of a Civilisation:The CIA's "new tricks" in the War on Terror
Hours before the release of the CIA info, the US Attorney General, in an echo of Obama policy, put a letter up on the Department of Justice home page explaining how he didn't want to convict people who believe they were acting with a prescribed US legal framework.  From his words, it sounds like anything he does will only be a token gesture:

Going cheap – only $450 million ….
It's about time the convenient yes minister-type arrangements for the Murray-Darling catchment allowing state government interference based on cronyism against genuine reform of resources management, were ended, and a governing body capable of making the changes necessary for that protection were incorporated, as promised in 2007.

Freezing for failure
The Israelis also need to receive a message. In their case the message is that the world has changed and that the kind of tricks that allowed the continued expansion of the settlements do no longer work. Further, it is not just a single person in the White House but a change of perception of them by many people around the world including a substantial number of US Jews.

September oil and other GFC nuggets
A quarter or two where the GDP manages a dribble of growth isn't "out of recession". If I'm right about the likely oil price reaction to any sustained return to growth, we possibly never will be.

Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal
Stuart pulls his focus back from the dumpster to give a big picture view of the shocking inefficiencies in the way we make and market food. When the veil is lifted on how food is farmed, processed, marketed, sold and often thrown away your jaw will hit the ground.

The Axis of Evil revisited
My claim to expertise on this is simply that I am, as far as I know, the only writer to have sampled the different conditions of these three regimes, or samples of regime; the kind of government as I'll start right out by phrasing it, considers the citizen essentially to be the property of the State. Football Down Under: Melbourne vs Brisbane
I've found before that when you go out alone to watch a football game you kind of spontaneously meet people who are also interested. It's a contrast to going out alone to listen to music or trying to get laid, when I inevitably just get lonelier as the night goes on.

Hope from Bethlehem
It would be better for us to see reality for what it is and exhaust any possibility of reaching an agreement now, with a pragmatic and moderate leadership, before it is replaced by zealous religious leadership that views violent Jihad as the main means in the struggle against Israel. The worst recipe ever
For a few (few = three +) years some Webdiarists (some = three +) have been asking for a Cooks’ Corner (or should that be Korner?). Eh bien, it’s the weekend, and I’ve spent the last three months (with a bit of time out for good behaviour – erm, winter hols) at a school (collecting data). One of the things that happens in a school staffroom, over those snatched moments of ... morning tea / lunch is that recipes are sometimes discussed (and/or disgusted).

"Not out of the woods yet"
[Mr Rudd] was commenting on the results of the National Australia Bank’s latest monthly business survey, which showed business confidence in Australia has bounced back to a pre-crisis level. Even the bank, though, was cautious in its assessment of this result. It said a “closer look” at the data suggests that it might be difficult to maintain this freshly restored momentum.

From Sheikh Jarrah to Sheikh Muwannis
Anyone following Middle Eastern politics, even if relying solely on the Australian media, would have been aware of the widespread condemnation of Israel eviction of 59 Palestinians from homes in Sheik Jarrah in East Jerusalem. ... While there have been some discussion in the Hebrew media, the legal implications of the court’s ruling have received scant attention. But they are huge.

Triple-A trouble
This was a “weightless economy” in which the marginal cost of producing the newest and most exciting products – delivered by the internet – was close to zero, so the old constraints on growth no longer applied. Fuelled by innovation, low interest rates and interesting new types of finance, western economies would keep expanding. Debt could always be repaid; housing bubbles would never burst. Above all, governments should leave wealth creation to the markets.

21st century climate blueprints: Perspectives from the recent history of the atmosphere
The unique nature of the "experiment" Homo sapiens is conducting with the atmosphere through the emission of 319 billion tons of carbon by 2007, and the consequent extreme rise in atmospheric CO2 of about 2 ppm/year, two orders of magnitude faster than during the last glacial termination, counsels caution. … The alternative to urgent fast tracked mitigation efforts does not bear contemplation.

Painting Obama as an enemy will hurt Israel badly
Obama did not invent a new American policy. The United States has long held that the settlements are illegal; the same is true for the status of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. The Americans are sticking to the same road map drawn up seven years ago, it's just that Israel apparently didn't notice that the Palestinians have fulfilled the first article in the document almost completely.
